Make way for Ducklings

Although we are mostly done with Five in a Row I had plans to be in Boston the other day.  We never rowed Make way for Ducklings.  So we rowed it and went to Boston Public Gardens.

If you plan on going there plan for time to drive around looking for a parking space. I drove for over a half hour and still didn't find a spot. I ended up in the expensive parking garage.  $24 for 3 hours of parking.  It was a real fun day.  We road the Swan Boat, then visited the Duckling statue, walked all around that park, Went over to Frog Pond and Samantha cooled off in the wading pool.  Then at the end of this part of the adventure we drove over to Sumerville to go to the Taza Chocolate Factory for a tour.  It was a very yummy tour. Many samples to taste.

Five in a Row- Paper Lanterns

We rowed the book Paper Lanterns.  It was a fun little book.  Its one of the digital downloads from the Five in a Row website.

We covered many topics in this row.  From some of the Chinese inventions to their wildlife and explorers.  We talked about missionaries to traveled to China to share the gospel.  We talked about China's history, geography and important landmarks.  We talked art and literature.  The most fun that we had was sending the paper lanterns we bought up into the sky.

In art we looked at how the artist rarely used the full body of a person often leaving off body part. He also used lots of bold colors and shapes.  Samantha found one of the only full body pictures.

I have the book Global art and we learned a few facts about Chinese art. We didn't do any of the art projects besides making the signature stamp.  They are the first to use stencils and an example is on the walls at The Thousand Buddha Cave in Western China

I also have the book Children Just Like Me. Samantha read about 2 siblings in China and how they live their lives.  

Another book we used this time along with Paper Lanterns is part of our history readers... On An American Day Volume 1.  She read the story The Last Rail about the Chinese Laborers were brought here from China to work the railroad.

We also watched on Amazon Prime- Travel with kids episode of when they go to China and  Torchlighters: Gladys Aylward Story.

 On Pureflix we watched Wow, I never knew that episode on how fortune cookies became about and the documentary on China/ Peoples Republic.

We always try and cook at least one meal but this time we did take out 2 different times. First we had chow main sandwiches and egg rolls then we had beef with Chinese vegetables and egg rolls. We in my city and the surrounding towns have a different chow main.  And putting it on a hamburger bun is a local meal.

I have been asked how did I row the books for 2 weeks so I am going to attempt to put together a schedule.  Understand that each row is unique.  I also add to our rows as my daughter is older.   I also only have one child to row with and my daughter loves to go on rabbit trails for ever most books.  I love that she loves to learn.  I row for only 4 days a week.  We have a day of coop so we don't do other school work on that day

Monday- Read the book-

• Language Arts: Vocabulary- review some of the vocabulary, its a long list so break it up and do multiple days
• Art: Light as a Main Theme 
• Math: Subtracting Dates- Solving a Riddle

Tuesday- Read the book

• Social Studies: Geography- Boston lesson from manual  
• Social Studies: Beginning of the American Revolution- Paul Reveres Ride information 
• Language Arts: Italics- Names of Ships lesson from manual
• Art: Use of Light and Contrast for Dramatic Effect lesson from the Manual- Have your child try and create a picture using light for contrast.  
• Find the Poem from the art lesson and read it
• Watch the DVD Liberty kids on Paul Revers Midnight ride.  These videos are great to watch about American History you can even have your child watch the series.  
• Science- Rabbit Trail- do a study on horses if you haven't done one from other FIAR books.  ( this was my daughters idea when we did the book. )  If your able see if you can have your child go on a horse. 

Wednesday- Watch a recording of the book on youtube or read the book.  

• Social Studies: History- The use of Signals - lesson from the manual- make up your own signals with your child.  Even a simple sign language sing I love you to do with your child 
• Read some more of the poetry from the book you took out from the library 
• Language Arts: Vocabulary- review more of the vocabulary words
• Art- make your own lantern here is a blog with directions on how to make one out of an orange juice container lantern to make  a different lantern to make 
• Art- One of the Lanterns used to signal

Thursday - Read the book

• Social Studies: History- read some go along books about Paul Reveres Ride.  A good one that my daughter really liked was the Rush Revere book Rush Revere and the American Revolution This book will take a couple weeks to read so you might want to start reading it at the beginning of the week. Or read any book on the American Revolution and the Boston Tea Party
• Language Arts- have your child try to create their own Patriotic Poem.
• Art- Let your child draw anything they want to from the book.  
• Have your child act out the book as you read it.  

Week 2

Monday- Have your child read the book

• Social Studies: Research Paul Revere either on the computer or from books from the library.  
• Language Arts: Poet- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow- lesson from the book
• Art: Architecture- Colonial- lesson from the book-  drive around your area and see if you can find any examples of Colonial Architecture.  Take pictures if you want. Look at page 116 in the manual.  Try drawing pictures of Colonial Architecture either from the houses you found or from the book.
• Art- painting of Paul Revere
• Continue to read the go along books about  the ride, Paul Revere and the American Revolution.

Tuesday- Read the book or watch it on a youtube video 

• Social Studies- learn about Sybil Ludington and her midnight ride.  
• Language arts- review the vocabulary words
• Art: Reflections in Water- from the manual - in the manual say to find a pond to see this.  Draw what you see   My daughter likes it when I draw with her.  
• Science: Fog Over Rivers from the manual.  make your own fog in a bottle 
• science: Fog- either use read along books on fog or a website.  the science of Fog

Wednesday- Read the book 

• Social Studies: History- make a time line of the American Revolution
• Language Arts- read some more poems either from Henry Longfellow or the Patriotic Poems
• Art- Review any of the art your child wants or look up Works of Art from that time period
• Science- Continue with any of the science topics-  Magic School Bus episode on the water cycle. 

Thursday- Read the book- this is our wrap it up day.  Do anything your child wants on any of the subjects.  Read go along books, watch documentaries,  watch shows, 

My daughter is really good about taking it further.  She loves Rabbit Trails.  This is the night we had my daughter recite the poem to her dad at supper.

We try to cook a meal with each book.    I didn't buy the cook book so I usually look up recipes online.  During the 2 weeks we rowed this book I made Shepards pie, Colonial Stew,  and oatmeal for breakfast as our porridge.  ColonialRecipes  I always have my daughter help me prepare the meal.

I don't remember everything from this row it been a while.  Usually if I am not prepared for the day We will do a few lessons from the manual and find a documentary or a Magic school bus episode on the science topic.

I want to add in there is nothing wrong with doing the manual as is.  Total discussion method works amazing and for many books that is all I have done.  But there have been books that my daughter takes off on the topics and wants more so I add more.  What is listed here might seem like a lot of time or work.  But its not really.

Oh I forgot to add my daughter loves to draw maps.  She drew a map of his ride.

How I plan on a Sunday Night-  I read over the manual, I read the book,  I look to see what is the science topics, I look to see if there are any documentaries or shows on the subject.  Some books have dvd's for them.  On average I plan for only 1 hour.  I don't plan out what we will do each day.  Just a list of all we will do and need for the rows.  Monday is usually just the manual and then later in the day we go out and find things that we will need for the row from books at the library or craft supplies.  I also have found some great places to go on a field trip to go along.  1 hour planning and I am done for it.  I take each day as it comes.  Some days we just read the book and do a lesson or 2 other times my daughter keeps asking for more.   I learned a long time ago to be flexible.

Five in a Row, Miss Rumphius

Its a cute tale of a story about a girl following in her grandfather's footsteps, Miss Rumphius succeeds in her mission and stirs the hears of the next generation.

many subjects were touched including:

living by the sea, doing special work, the good and the bad about nicknames, Geography of the areas the book covered, story telling, library skills of yesteryear (the lost skills) We looked at the type of art the books uses, The architecture of the buildings in the different countries she visits, How to use art techniques to show wind or breezes and shadows,science in gardening, seeds, birds, shells, health and determining directions by the sea. We talked about ways to make the world better and what we each can do. We talked about family values.

One of the art project Samantha did was to paint Lupines on the windows.

We took a nature walk with the class nature in the city and saw some Lupines along the way

the setting was in a coastal town more then likely in Maine.  They are known for their lobster.  So we had a meal of lobster rolls and blueberry pie, We also added some coconut water she went to an island and they most likely had coconuts.

We rowed Lentil recently.  It was a cute story of a boy who couldn't sing. He couldn't pucker his lips to whistle.  He eventually found the harmonica and could play that.  Its a story set in small town America. We followed the manual. Then added in some other things:

Five in a Row- Another Celebrated Dancing Bear.

I loved this story.  We rowed it when my daughter was taking a homeschool ballet class.

For Social Studies we talked about  Geography and Culture.  I have a book called Children Just like Me.  Its a fun way for your child to see what life is like for other children around the world and the country your studying in FIAR.  She learned about Russian Ballet, music, and authors.  She learned the country of Russia and about some of their history,  We watched a story on the Czar Nicholas and the fate of his family.  We watched the story about people thinking his daughter  Anastasia  escaped.  We talked about Occupations, Hospitality, and relationships.

We moved onto the Language and learned some new vocabulary, descriptive language, characterization, drama in writing and titles of books. How good titles will bring a person to want to read the book.  

We talked about Art and how the artist illustrated the book.  They used a method called Etchings. It makes for a very unique picture.  Here is how they use this method....  In traditional pure etching, a metal (usually copper, zinc or steel) plate is covered with a waxy ground which is resistant to acid. The artist then scratches off the ground with a point etching needle where he or she wants a line to appear in the finshed piece, so exposing the bare metal.

We also discussed the colors the artist used to create the warm feelings through out the book.

We moved onto Architecture.  What the Russian skyline looked like.  How the tops of their buildings were called onion turrets.  Here is Samantha's drawing of it...

We did some science about boiling point and freezing point. My daughter dug deeper and researched bears.

We didn't do much for cooking for this row. I found some tea cakes and we drank tea.

the love of a good curriculum

Samantha and I really love Five in a Row.  We enjoy it.  We both learn new things all the time because of it.  But the biggest reason I love it is its instilled a love of good books in Samantha, the love of reading.  Here she is on a Sunday afternoon reading a book.  We bought a few new books at the Dollar book store and a library sale.  Ok I puchased about 14 new books at the book sale and maybe 4 from the book store.   Yes my name is Jennifer and I have a problem I love books and buy many often.  BUT I always buy them at an amazing price no more then $1 each often less then that.

My husband said to me the other day he thinks we have too many books.  A person can never have too many books.  Silly man.  

Family Fun Night at Heritage State Park

I love that the city is trying to do things for families this summer from movie nights to fun activities.  The city built a splash pad for the kids 3 new playgrounds in the last couple of years.  The nice new bike path.  

We went as a last minute decision to the Family Fun Night at Heritage State Park down on the waterfront.  It was hot, humid and rainy.  We weren't even sure they were still holding it.  I am glad we went we had so much fun.  

There was dancing to old time music,  games of yesteryear and crafts for the kids.  They also had their summer display of Fall River History.    Fall River was once a major textile city.  We had the leading number of Spindles in Leading Textile Centers         

I love when we can have fun and add some history to our lives.

Some fun for the kids,  Learning to tie nautical knots, Writing our name out in nautical flags, old time game fun.  This had the kids going for a long time.  To think with all the electronics we have kids really do enjoy playing simple games.

New School Year Excitement

So we are half way through the summer.  I am already getting excited about starting a new school year in the fall.  I thought I had it all planned out.  What we were going to use.  But ideas change and I have a whole new plan.

Why I changed the plan... Steve and I have been seriously talking about moving down to North Carolina next year so we can be closer to our grandchildren.  We do live in a great area for Early American History spots.  So we are going to visit Native American's to the Civil War Era this year.  We will hopefully be able to stop at some civil war historical places along the way down to visit Mike in the spring.  I want to make sure we get to all the spots up here in New England before we move.

Also science has changed too. Originally Samantha asked to learn about Human anatomy.  But now she wants to learn about about the ocean, ocean creatures, and beaches. Also in this study we she will be learning about live around a fresh water pond.  The ocean study because once we move down south the ocean will be about a 4 hour drive.

We will continue with our FIAR studies.  I had hoped to be finished with volume 4 but life got in the way so we will be finishing up volume 4 and then moving onto Beyond Five in a Row. I already have all of Beyond Volumes and the books.  Samantha loves FIAR so much she asked if she can finish the stories for FIAR volume 4 first.  I did purchase all the digital volumes too.  This should be shaping up to be a great year.

Five in a Row- Hanna's Cold Winter

We just finished up this row.  It was a real fun row for us as the setting is in Hungary and I just found out that my husband and daughter have a lot of Hungarian in them.

So we spent time learning all about Budapest, Hungary. We read the manual, watched a documentary   and looked at video's and pictures of Hungary's folk art, folk dancing and traditional Hungarian music. We watcha short video of a Hungary folk tale  I have a few more websites we looked at for Hungary on my pinterest,  We both really enjoyed learning about Hungary.

We learned about history and what it was like in Hungary during and after WWII.  We learned about the Cog-railway that Tibor's family rode to get to and return from the zoo.  We also learned about the type of the fireplace they showed in the book was from that time period.  We combined science with this when learning about the cog-railway and friction.  We watched the episode of the Magic School bus on Netflix on friction Season 1 Episode 10.  We talked about how at one time people worked 6 days a week and that was normal.  Now if we work that many days its called overtime.  

For language arts I asked Samantha if she could tell me what point of view the story was told from.  Right away she told first person point of view. She was correct. We talked about the parts of the story.  What the conflict is, what the plot is and the resolution is.  We talked about how the Dad like to tell riddles and we looked up a few.  

We talked about the art of the book.  Who the artist was.  How she used water colors to create the beautiful illustrations.  We talked Poetry and said a real cute poem about the Hippopotamus.  We discussed Architecture.  She looked at the Lion Bridge and Cover building.  I then showed her pictures of those in real life and how they still stand today.  If you have time look up the zoo on google maps.  I had her do an oil pastel water color painting.  It came out very cute. It didn't turn out like the lesson I had found said it would the oil pastel repelled the watercolor unlike the lesson one.  I kind of thought it would.  It supposed to be the hippo in the water.  

We listened to some classical Hungarian music, Hungarian Folk music and looked up the musician Franz Liszt and listened to his type of music, rhapsody.  He used leitmotif which is a recurring theme representing a person, idea or event. We listened on youtube the famous piece of music called "The Blue Danube Waltz"  Written about the river Danube that flows through Hungary right down the middle of Buda and Pest.  It also flows through Austria , Germany and a few other countries.  

Science,  We talked about the Paprika pepper.  Then we used Paprika in our cooking.  I used the recipe in the book for Hungarian Goulash.  We also talked about hot springs, Hippopotamuses, and zoo history.  

The Goulash was very yummy I wish I took a picture of it but I forgot. Both Samantha and Steve said they would eat it again if I cooked it.  I have so far loved the recipes we tried from the manual.  

There were a few more lessons in the book. Some we did others we didn't.  We both really enjoyed the book and all that went along with it.  

Five in a Row- Mailing May

Mailing May was a real fun row.  

We started the row first reading it then going to the post office for a field trip.  I didn't get any pictures but I wish I did.  It was lots of fun.  We went to a distribution center.  We were shown exactly what happens when you mail a letter or package.  How it gets sorted. What the mail carriers go through each day.  It was interesting.  The tour guide and another carrier told us some funny stories.  I shared with them the story of Mailing May.  They told us about a dog name Owney who traveled the country on a mail train.  Owney story.  The mail carrier recommended this website mail

Once we were home we talked about Geography.  Did a worksheet on Idaho.  

I had my daughter research the American Flag of 1914 when the story takes place in time.

I had a chapter book about Daniel Boone. In the story May comments that she "felt as adventuresome as Daniel Boone"  It was a short chapter book she read it over the weekend.  

We read some books about trains.

Had a discussion about Department stores and life in the 1900's.  She was able to relate to the department store May went to since we go to a quaint general store when we go to New Hampshire.  

I shared with my daughter about stamp collecting. My uncle collects them.  When my sister and I were young we would collect them also.  I had her look up how much a normal stamp cost in 1914 and what it looked like.

I had my daughter write examples of Hyperbole.  I will have to update this when I dig out her sentences and share.  they were funny.  All about our family. 

We also talked about how the author took a real story and added to it.  He didn't know all the details of what happened with May but he had the basic information so he used creative license to add details to the story.  

We did the creative painting project.  to draw with white paint or chalk on black paper make a snowman like in the book.  

For the science part I had my daughter research the Boar Hog.  May compared the Steam engine to a boar hog.  I love having her dig deeper.

Finally we talked about steam power and how it works.  watched a few videos on it.  We tried and experiment we found you make a pinwheel and you use steam to make it move.  We tried we failed. LOL  that's science.  

We did so much more but this was the highlights of our 2 week row.  I highly recommend this book and FIAR Row.   

How we use FIAR with an older child

A few years back we found the curriculum Five in a Row.  We loved it.  So I started using it right away.

We had some fun doing them.  Samantha learned a lot. 

Then a year or so ago I felt we weren't doing enough "school" so I ordered a full curriculum.  

As much as we loved it we both missed FIAR.  There is nothing wrong with the curriculum BUT

she had already learned a lot of the information with FIAR.

So we focused more on FIAR.  

Here is what our days are like with FIAR

I come home from work and I have my daughter do math and grammar. Later in the day she will read the living books we are using for history or we read it together.  Depending on how the day is going or if we have an activity to get to when we do the reading.

Then we read the book for FIAR and do the activities from the manual and add in our extras

We take 2 weeks to do a row (thats what its called when using FIAR)

We usually try to read the book each day even when we do it for 2 weeks.  I sometimes have her read to me.  We find someone reading it on youtube.  There has been a couple rows that actually had a cartoon or movie we found on youtube or amazon to go along with it.  The book Wee Gillis has a short movie I found at the library.

Geography and History

using the manual we talked about Wisconsin. Read up on when it entered the union and that it is the 30th state. We talked about where it got the nickname the Badger State

She made a map of Wisconsin and the Great Lakes. (she loves making maps)

We found Wisconsin on the map.  

This book didn't have much to get for history out of it. So we continued to read some of the living books we read. We were working on Native Americans. So we talked about their lives and how different it is from us now.  

Social Studies: Character Relationshisp

We talked about disappoinment and asked her to tell me why Nicky was disappointed. I asked her to show me in the book where Nicky looked disappointed.  We talked about when she has been disappointed.  We also talked about how we handle ourselves when we are disappointed.  

We then talked about Frustration and Flexibility.  We followed the manual for this.

Next was teachability.  how Nicky a first wouldn't listen to his grandmother but when he got over his feelings he listened to her and things went much better.

Social Studies: This History of Television

This was a fun one.  We read the manual.  Then we looked up pictures of the first tv's .  She talked to her grandmother and what it was like to get their first tv.  I found some old shows on Hulu and Netflix to show Samantha what it was like before color tv.  Talked about how tv shut down at a certain time each night and what the screen looked like.  We talked about how people used radio's before they had tv for their entertainment.  

Social Studies: Chores

We do have Samantha do chores normally but we made up a chore chart so she can do it each day without me telling her what to do.  We talked about how helping out makes it easier for everyone.  We work together as a family.  

Language Arts

*We followed the manual learning about Opening sentences. I then had her create her own opening sentence to a story she might write and then talk about if she thinks her sentence would make others want to continue with her story.

*We talked about  where do stories come from? following the manual.  

*we also followed the manual and talked about Character names.  How grandma was named the River Rat by Nicky and his father and why they call her that.  We talked about how nicknames are given.  

*another topic under Language arts is creative imagining and writing.  We talked about things not told in the story like did Nicky ever go back to visit his grandmother,  Maybe spend another summer with her. or went back when he was older.  It was fun thinking of all the fun he might have had later on.

* vocabulary- when the manual lists vocabulary words I have her look up the definition, write a sentence and then draw a picture for that word.  

Art

Learn to Draw was listed in the manual as Nicky spends the summer exploring and learning to draw all he sees.  I didn't do anything with this as she takes an art class on Thursdays.

Seeing in Art- The author says when you draw something from nature you learn about it.  We talked about this and what it means.  I had her go outside and draw something from nature.  She drew the big tree in our backyard. We took a few nature walks into the woods.  We went on a minivacation to New Hampshire and went on a hike in the mountain. We also had a field trip out to an ice house ruins.  

We talk about the other art subjects from the manual but since she does take art we only touched on them.

Building a raft- We both built a raft out of Popsicle sticks. We then drew animals on it like Nicky did.  We also went out into the woods and let our rafts go.  We did make sure we caught them so we didn't liter in nature.  

Science

THe manual has these topics for science: Zoology- Badger, Muskrat, Botany- conifers and deciduous trees, North woods and Lake wildlife, fishing and ways of seeing underwater,

I had Samantha research the badger and the muskrat and write about it. Do its classification, draw a picture of it

She read in a text book all about the types of trees and types of environments.  

We only talked about types of fishing and what is used to see underwater.

** found some wildkratts episodes with I think the muskrat on netflix to watch**

the science of rivers. We took a nature walk to watch a river.  I found some worksheets to read about rivers of where they start and where they end up.  

Cooking

Volume 4 has recipes to go along with each row.  We tried out the Honey Cinnamon Cornbread and it was very good that we made it many times since.  

Another recipe is for Burgers. We didn't follow this but made our own.  

I believe Five in a Row can be a very full curriculum even when using it for an older child.  As for things I do add for my child to the row.  

• Depending on the setting I look for documentaries on the country or state. there is a series on Hulu called Traveling with children.  That one is always fun to watch.
• research deeper into the animals of the book. Do their classification, Have her write a few paragraphs on what she finds
• do some kind of craft to go along with the story
• look deeper into the time period of the book
• try to find a place to go on a field trip for depending on topics. 
• Look for youtube videos or readings of the book. I had her make a youtube recording of a book we couldn't find one for.
• I look for one poem that might go along with the story to have her read during the row.
• if there is a topic I can us to do a science experiment in it then we do it.
• I look for chapter books to go along with the rows.  There is a list somewhere on the internet for the first 3 volumes.   
• I use the FIAR pages that you get free when you sign up for them Oh I am forgetting what they are called.  I also look for any lapbooks free on the internet to use.  Sometimes the act of writing things down helps my daughter to remember.  It also gives a nice keepsake to look through.  I don't do the traditional lapbooks. We put all we do on card stock and put in a binder. 

I pick a few topics each day to do. 

It may sound like a lot but honestly its not.  I don't plan more then the Sunday night before.  I make a list of any needs we might have.  I usually go to the library with Sam to get any books to go along with it on the first day we start the row.   We have fun.  The one time we tried stopping and go with another curriculum she asked almost daily for Five in a Row.  This year we are finishing up all the rows from volume 1-4 and will move onto Beyond.  She is very excited to do this.

I forgot to add we did cave drawings like he said the raft drawings look like. The manual has you looking at cave art so we did and she made her own.

I do find that I have been taking less pictures of our rows.  So I have only a few to share from this row.
